The Community:

 

Kensington is a special district comprised of primarily upper middle class homes and two

small business areas. There are just under eight thousand residents living in the District.

Kensington consists of two square miles in west Contra Costa County, bordered by the

cities of Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, and Tilden Park. The landscape is beautiful and

the views are breathtaking. The community is extremely supportive of the Police

Department.

The Department:

 

The Kensington Police Protection and Community Services District is governed by five

Directors. Day to day operations are handled by the Chief of Police who is also the

General Manager. Four Sergeants, five Police Officers, and the District Secretary staff of

the Kensington Police Department.

 

Members of the Department are committed to providing the best service possible to the

residents and visitors. Kensington Police Officers perform a variety of services which

include; patrol response to crimes in-progress, traffic enforcement, first aid and CPR,

investigations, warrant and subpoena service, and many other law enforcement duties.

Qualifications:

. Completion of a California POST certified academy within the last 3 years, or

current employment as a California Police Officer, or employment as a

California Police Officer within the last 3 years.

. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

. Must be at least 21 years of age.

. Height and weight must be proportionate as determined by the Department's

   physician.

. Normal hearing and eyesight corrected to 20/20 with normal color vision.

 

 Hiring Process:

. Writing exercise.

. Oral Interview.

. Background investigation.

. Polygraph examination.

. Psychiatric Examination.

. Medical Examination.

 

Probationary Period:

 

All newly sworn officers will serve a probationary period of eighteen months, without

exception.

 

Salary and Incentives:

 

All officers will start at the first step ($4579/ mo.) which includes holiday pay. Officers

move up a step each year until reaching the fifth step ($5673/ mo). Officer's possessing a POST Intermediate Certificate will receive an additional 5% above top step. Officers

with an Advanced Certificate will be awarded an increase of 7 1/2% above top step.

 

Benefits:

. PERS Health Benefit Program, Vision Service Plan, and Delta Dental Plan for

employees and their families, which is paid for by the District.

. $100,000 life insurance is paid by the District at the base policy rate.

. Sick leave - accumulated at one day per month.

. Long term disability paid by the District.

. 13 vacation days upon completion of the first year; one additional day is

added per year until the completion of the eighth year; one additional day is

added every other year until the completion of the nineteenth year.

. PERS 3% at 50 retirement with a 90% maximum. The District pays the

employees' 9% contribution.

. $800 annual uniform allowance.

. $250 annual equipment allowance.

. $500 annual tuition reimbursement.

. Modified 4-10 work schedule that gives officers every other weekend off.
